Three Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Car Tires

3 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Car Tires

Some of the most important parts of your car are the tires. This is because they are the one connection between your car and the road. They also play a crucial role when it comes to the performance of your vehicle. Without the right tires and proper tire pressure, your vehicle’s performance and the fuel economy can take a big hit. That’s why you should always make sure that they are properly maintained. Though there are many things that you can do, let’s look at three tips for getting the most from your car tires.

Keep Them Properly Inflated

This is one of the biggest things that you can do to extend the life of your tires. If your tires are low on air, it can create uneven pressure on the treads and lead to increased wear. It also lessens the response of the vehicle. The same goes if the tires are too full. Over-inflated tires cause just the middle section of tread to touch the road, creating uneven wear. You also lose a bit of control as there are parts of the tire that do not actually contact the road. Getting the tires to the proper pressure gives you the best results.

Keep Them Aligned

When your car hits pot holes or bumps in the road, something has to give, and most often that something is your axle. Though the hits that it takes from a small hole in the road are not usually significant, over time, those hits can add up and do some damage. This throws off the alignment of your wheels, causing them to toe in or stick out, rather than staying straight. If you let go of the wheel while driving and feel the vehicle pulling to the left or right, or have a vibrating steering wheel, it’s probably an alignment issue.

Though you can drive through an alignment problem, it can put a lot of strain on your tires if they are not straight. The tire treads can wear much quicker when the vehicle is out of alignment, and if you want to extend the life of your tires, making sure that they wear evenly is one of the best things that you can do.

Keep Them Rotated

Most vehicles are either front- or rear-wheel drive, and depending on the drivetrain configuration, the tires can wear quicker in the front of the back. For that reason, it’s important to have your tires rotated on a regular basis. By moving the front tires to the back and vice versa, they wear consistently and make it possible for you to extend their life. That way, when it comes time for new tires, you can replace all four at once, rather than having to buy two tires on two separate occasions. It’s an easy way to plan ahead.
