Can you get parts for a discontinued car?

One of the fears that people have when shopping for older vehicles is that they might not be able to get good service or find replacement parts anymore. This fear is even greater for vehicles that have been discontinued, and especially for vehicles from brands that have been discontinued altogether, like Pontiac or Scion. So, if you’re trying to decide whether or not to purchase a discontinued car, we thought we’d at least set this one fear to rest for you, as you can certainly get parts for discontinued cars.

While newer vehicles and vehicles still in production are obviously easier to service and have more readily available parts, it isn’t as if all the parts just disappear or stop being made along with it. The parts industry can sometimes be an even more lucrative one for automotive manufacturers, so brands often tend to continue producing parts for discontinued or outdated vehicles long after they stop producing the vehicles themselves.

As for brands that get discontinued, the brand is generally a part of a larger automotive family, like Pontiac belonging to General Motors and Scion belonging to Scion. So, 9 times out of 10, you don’t have to worry about the manufacturer completely disappearing. And even if a brand did happen to be standalone, or you’re looking at a vehicle that has been discontinued for a long, long time, there are plenty of aftermarket and specialty parts companies out there who will be still be making the parts you need for decades to come.
