Trunk & Hood

Take another close look at the vehicle’s exterior, this time paying special attention to the trunk and hood. If the physical panels look fine, then go ahead and pop them both open. It’s easy to miss this step, and you could end up driving home a vehicle whose trunk you can’t get into. Make sure that everything under the hood and trunk are as they should be – any and all lights work, no carpet damage, the spare tire is present, etc.

Fluids

While this one might be a bit inconsequential compared to the rest of items on this list, as it is easily remedied, a used vehicle should always have fresh, full fluid levels. That means oil, radiator fluid, transmission fluid, power steeling fluid, brake fluid, air conditioning coolant and washer fluid.

Belts

There are a few belts that help make your vehicle run, and without them you could end up having a bad time. When you take it for a test drive, be sure to listen for a squealing noise from the front of the vehicle. This might also cause the power steering and air conditioning unit to not work properly. When you look under the hood, you can also check the belts physically to make sure there aren’t any obvious signs of wear and tear.
